Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (APD.US), the world's first and largest ultra-high-purity ammonia field gas plant built in Wuhu City, Anhui Province, has been put into production and will be a new high-brightness LED for the local area. The project provides ultra-high purity ammonia gas with an estimated annual production of 2,000 metric tons of gas.
Air Products said that due to the prospect of the mainland LED market, a second high-purity ammonia plant will be built at the same manufacturing base. The plant's capacity is the same as that of the first phase of the plant, and it is scheduled to start production in mid-2012. It is reported that the gallium nitride base layer used in the LED manufacturing process requires a large amount of ammonia gas to provide a source of nitrogen.
In addition, Air Products recently signed a long-term contract with Shaanxi Future Energy Chemical Co., Ltd. to build an on-site air separation plant in Yulin City, Shaanxi Province. The contract is the world's largest air separation plant on-site gas supply order to industrial gas companies.
