The latest e-book disassembly evaluation series report (2): manufacturing details lead to differences

The keyboard is considered "unwanted." Here are some tips on using the touch panel effectively.

"All the unnecessary parts were removed," said Noguchi from Sony Electronics. The Sony Reader Daily Edition eliminates the Kindle’s keyboard, which is seen as a redundant feature. This allows users to enjoy a more intuitive and direct reading experience through the full-touch screen (Figure 2).

The Reader Daily Edition features a touch panel on its e-paper display, allowing direct interaction with the screen. In contrast, the Nook offers an additional LCD touchscreen alongside its e-paper display.

As shown in actual use, the full-screen touch panel enables a wide range of functions. For instance, users can freely write text or draw on the screen, or zoom in on specific text for better readability (Figure 3).

The Reader Daily Edition supports both writing/drawing on the screen (a) and zooming in on selected text (b).

Sony's Noguchi is confident that this device will surprise even those familiar with electronic paper technology. Although e-paper typically has a slow refresh rate, making it difficult to support real-time handwriting input, the Sony Reader Daily Edition delivers smooth performance without lag. This is achieved not only through specialized e-paper technology but also through optimized software. “Since LIBRIÉ, we have been studying E Ink’s e-paper capabilities for some time, allowing us to develop the best algorithms,” Noguchi explained. This shows how deep hardware understanding can lead to unique and superior user experiences.

Barnes & Noble’s Nook also lacks a physical keyboard, but its operating system works differently. Instead of relying solely on the main screen, it uses a separate LCD touch panel (Figure 2), where a virtual keyboard is displayed for text input. While this dual-screen design has its benefits, industry experts believe its full potential hasn’t been fully realized yet.

Basic Design and Similar Details Lead to Key Differences

What hardware improvements have been made to deliver an exceptional reading experience? This time, we worked with several e-book manufacturers and engineers from communication companies to disassemble the Reader Daily Edition and the Nook. Sony designed and manufactured the Reader Daily Edition, while the Nook was developed by an electronics manufacturing service provider for Barnes & Noble. Their origins are quite different.

There are two main observations from the disassembly. First, both devices share a very similar basic hardware design. Second, the Reader Daily Edition shows more attention to detail in terms of operational enhancements, aesthetics, and durability.

The circuit architecture is almost identical

“What will happen?” is usually the most exciting moment during a disassembly. However, this time, the engineer didn’t show much excitement from opening the case to the start of the disassembly. It seemed there wasn’t anything particularly special inside these e-readers. Even when comparing components and checking the main circuit board, we couldn’t find significant differences (Figures 4 and 5).

An engineer noted that the circuit layout resembles that of a mobile phone, with the processor, 3G module, and other components neatly arranged. This design is very similar to Amazon’s Kindle 2.

However, upon closer inspection, there were subtle differences between the two models, such as (1) different battery placements, (2) variations in antenna size, and (3) different methods of securing the e-paper display.
