Hello everyone, 2017 has come to an end, and the monk can finally take a break. This year was quite hectic—didn't write many original articles, and didn't apply for the number of aunt's public welfare either. Life just got too busy, and I'm feeling pretty drained.
After talking about Xiaomi, it seems that after their monkeys tasted the sweetness, the brand really started to bloom. With the popularity of their smartphones, other Xiaomi products like this Bluetooth headset also gained some traction. When the second generation of Zhongyu came out, I remember how cool it felt to wear a Bluetooth headset and talk to others. The business elite or special heroes looked so stylish, and being able to keep your hands free while talking was super convenient. But then, when someone actually called you, you realized the Bluetooth headset wasn’t as practical as it seemed. Wearing something in your ear is still a bit uncomfortable. Answering calls and then handling things with one hand feels inefficient. It’s a lot of effort for something that doesn’t always work perfectly. Still, for many people, Bluetooth headsets are a must. After all, a product that’s only “cool†can’t last long in such a competitive market. There are so many manufacturers out there.
Xiaomi’s products, especially the "youth version," are known for being affordable, which is great. However, this headset is not exactly high-end. While some serious brands offer good sound quality and noise cancellation at a higher price, what’s the real story here? Let me find out.
Despite being a budget option, the packaging has a decent design. If it were a different brand, it would probably cost around 1XX yuan.
On the back, there are various technical specifications listed, giving it a professional look.
Removing the plastic shell reveals the headset itself, and the black design looks quite "business-like."
Although the straight black design may seem a bit plain, it's much better than the cheap earphone style. At least it has more individuality.
Since it's a budget model, there are no extra accessories. Just two different sizes of ear tips and a charging cable, which doesn't support data transfer. Everything is done to cut costs.
The touch controls on the earpiece allow functions like turning on/off, answering, hanging up, searching, and skipping tracks. The touch is slightly soft, but it's not unusable. Unlike high-end models, it doesn't use capacitive touch, but it's still functional.
The charging port uses a micro USB, which is a nice touch because it avoids the hassle of losing a specific charging cable.
The left side of the headset has a volume button, allowing you to adjust the volume independently from your phone.
The right side has no buttons, which is fine since most Bluetooth headsets don’t need that many. Too many buttons could lead to accidental presses, which is annoying.
The indicator light is red when charging and blue when working. However, like many budget headphones, the light isn’t very bright, making it hard to see in low light. Some users prefer Jabra’s design, where the indicator is on the ear and doesn’t leak light, offering better privacy. In my opinion, the leaked light just shows that you’re using the headphones, which isn’t really useful. Maybe Jabra’s approach is better.
The included silicone ear tips are designed to stay in place, like shark fins, helping prevent the headphones from falling out.
Finally, compared to Jabra, the weight difference is noticeable—three grams vs. six grams. The gap is clear, and the differences between the two headsets are significant. Xiaomi’s so-called "noise reduction" is more like audio compression, removing frequencies outside the speech range, which makes the voice sound dry. It's software-based, not hardware, so it won't help much in noisy environments. As for sound quality, listening to stories is okay, but music is not ideal. Monaural headsets aren’t great for music.
To sum up, the advantages of these Xiaomi headphones include:
- Affordable price
- Acceptable battery life, enough for a class or meeting
- Best design and build quality for under 50 yuan
The disadvantages are:
- Not very comfortable during intense exercise
- Sound quality is underwhelming
- Noise reduction is mostly marketing hype
So, is this headset worth buying? If you're just looking for a basic pair for occasional use, like listening to audiobooks, it might be okay. But if you're serious about sound quality or need reliable noise cancellation, you’ll need to spend more. After all, your ears deserve better than just a cheap solution.
