Intelligent manufacturing goes all the way, industry enthusiasm

Smart manufacturing is not only helping manufacturers better adapt to market demands, but also enabling them to manage rising labor costs and meet the standardization needs of modern production. With the strong promotion of China's smart manufacturing strategy, an increasing number of companies are starting to implement intelligent factory transformations. However, for China’s manufacturing industry to further advance in smart manufacturing, continuous efforts and improvements are still required. The enthusiasm and ongoing development of the smart manufacturing sector must be sustained throughout the entire process. From digital manufacturing to intelligent manufacturing, it represents an inevitable trend in industrial evolution. Today, smart manufacturing has become a core component of advanced manufacturing strategies in countries like the U.S., Germany's Industry 4.0, and China's Made in China 2025. All nations have recognized the importance of smart manufacturing as a key direction for industrial progress. In China, smart manufacturing has received significant attention. On December 6th, as part of the 2017 World Smart Manufacturing Conference, the Sino-German Intelligent Manufacturing Integration Innovation and Development Forum was held in Nanjing. Over 500 international organizations, business leaders, and industry experts gathered to explore new paths for integration between research and industry, collaborative innovation, and how to build an industrial ecosystem that supports smart manufacturing. This event highlighted the growing momentum behind this transformation. Later on December 8th, the "China Smart Manufacturing Green Paper (2017)" was officially released at the same conference. The report provides an overview of China's smart manufacturing development, highlights the experiences of Chinese enterprises, and discusses various models such as discrete manufacturing, process manufacturing, networked collaboration, mass customization, and remote maintenance. It also presents several case studies that demonstrate successful implementations. From these two major events, it's clear that smart manufacturing remains a central focus in the industry. According to Wang Ruixiang, president of the China Machinery Industry Federation, data from a survey of domestic industrial robot manufacturers showed that nearly 90% of companies saw an increase in new orders in the first half of the year, with over 70% reporting growth of more than 20%. China has been the world's largest industrial robot market for four consecutive years, with sales reaching 89,000 units in 2016 and expected to reach 150,000 by 2020. These figures reflect a rising enthusiasm for smart manufacturing across the industry. Indeed, the popularity of smart manufacturing stems from its ability to help companies adapt to market changes, reduce labor costs, meet production standards, and boost efficiency. As China continues to push forward with its smart manufacturing strategy, more companies are embracing intelligent factory transformations. This shift not only involves changes in production processes but also in service models. To move further, China's manufacturing industry must continue to make breakthroughs in key technologies, such as digital design and manufacturing. It should also promote shared production models, enhancing collaboration in design, equipment, and R&D. Furthermore, integrating internal industrial technology with external information systems is essential. According to recent surveys, most Chinese manufacturing companies are still at the level of industrial 2.0. Many lack a clear understanding of smart manufacturing, which hinders effective implementation. This is a major challenge in advancing the smart manufacturing strategy. Addressing this requires cultivating skilled professionals through education and industry initiatives. For the domestic manufacturing sector, achieving intelligent production is just the beginning. What truly matters is the realization of "intelligence" — shifting from machine-centered to people-centered smart manufacturing. The next generation of smart manufacturing aims to give machines human-like wisdom, making them more intuitive and responsive. This is what the industry needs to achieve in the long run.
