Maxim has introduced the industry's first efficient and highly integrated 15W MAX14748 USB Type-C charging and charger detection solution, offering designers a simpler and more efficient way to implement USB Type-C with two-series lithium-ion battery packs. This innovative solution ensures fast and safe charging for portable devices, eliminating the need for multiple discrete components that are commonly used in current market solutions. By integrating essential functions into a single chip, the MAX14748 streamlines the design process, allowing engineers to focus on leveraging the full potential of USB Type-C in their applications.
USB Type-C has become a versatile connector used across various industries—from wireless microphones and high-end cameras to VR headsets and mobile medical devices. These applications often rely on two-series battery configurations and require reliable power management. Traditionally, designing such systems involved complex setups with multiple external components, increasing both cost and the risk of failure. The MAX14748 addresses these challenges by combining a charger, USB Type-C detection, overvoltage protection, and power management into one compact package.
This highly integrated solution supports traditional USB BC1.2 charging as well as non-standard charging protocols, doubling the power delivery capability compared to Micro USB. Its programmable automatic input current limit (AICL) function ensures safe and efficient charging by maximizing the current from the adapter without risking damage to the device. Maxim continues to expand its power portfolio, supporting the growing demand for advanced USB Type-C applications. Other related products include the MAX77756 buck regulator, MAX17205 fuel gauge, and MAX20323 CC pin protector, all designed to enhance system reliability and performance.
The MAX14748 is available in a 54-bump wafer-level package (WLP), measuring just 3.97mm x 2.77mm x 0.64mm, and is priced at $3.40 per unit (FOB USA). It can be purchased through Maxim’s website or authorized distributors. An evaluation kit, the MAX14748EVKIT#, is also available for $77, enabling designers to test and integrate the solution quickly.
