Maxim has introduced the industry’s first efficient and highly integrated 15W MAX14748 USB Type-C charging and charger detection solution, offering designers a simpler and more efficient way to implement USB Type-C with two-series Li-Ion battery packs. This innovative solution ensures fast and safe charging for portable devices, eliminating the need for multiple discrete ICs that are commonly used in current market solutions. By simplifying the design process, engineers can now focus on maximizing the benefits of USB Type-C in their applications.
USB Type-C has become a versatile connector used across a wide range of devices, from wireless microphones and high-end cameras to VR headsets and mobile medical equipment. These devices often rely on two-series batteries and require reliable charging capabilities. Traditionally, designing such systems involved numerous external components, increasing both cost and complexity. The MAX14748 addresses these challenges by integrating essential functions into a single chip, significantly reducing the number of required components and improving system reliability.
The MAX14748 combines a charger, USB Type-C charger detection, 28V overvoltage protection, and power-supply circuitry into one compact package. It is compatible with traditional USB BC1.2 charging as well as non-standard charging methods, enabling twice the power delivery compared to Micro USB solutions. The programmable automatic input current limit (AICL) feature ensures safe and efficient charging by utilizing the full capacity of the charging adapter without risking damage to the device.
In addition to its core functionality, the MAX14748 offers comprehensive protection features, including JEITA charge protection, ±15kV ESD protection on USB adapter pins, and 28V overvoltage protection. These features enhance the safety and durability of the system, making it ideal for demanding applications.
According to Sui Shieh, Vice President of Industrial and Healthcare at Maxim Integrated, “The MAX14748 is the first solution on the market that enables designers to fully leverage USB Type-C connectors with 2S battery packs. With this technology, engineers can now implement simple, high-efficiency charging solutions that extend fast and safe lithium-ion battery charging to a broader range of battery-powered products.â€
The MAX14748 comes in a compact 54-bump wafer-level package (WLP), measuring 3.97mm x 2.77mm x 0.64mm, with a ball pitch of 0.4mm. It is available for $3.40 per unit (in 1000-piece quantities, FOB USA) through Maxim’s website and authorized distributors. An evaluation board, the MAX14748EVKIT#, is also available for $77, allowing engineers to test and develop their designs quickly and efficiently.
