In November, Broadcom, a leading player in the global semiconductor market for wired and wireless communications, announced that the Palm Treo® 680 smartphone—featuring its M-Stream technology—made its commercial debut. This innovative technology enhances signal reception and voice quality without increasing the cost of materials or requiring upgrades to existing network infrastructure. The Treo 680 is the third embedded version of Broadcom’s baseband processor and industry-leading Bluetooth solution within the Palm Treo series, now equipped with M-Stream to deliver clearer calls and broader signal coverage.
M-Stream technology significantly reduces call drops and improves voice clarity, offering a more seamless experience for mobile users. The new Palm Treo 680, powered by this technology, delivers superior voice quality compared to other handsets, all while keeping material costs stable. Moreover, it allows network operators to nearly double their existing network capacity without sacrificing call quality, avoiding the need for costly infrastructure overhauls.

M-Stream technology addresses common issues like dropped calls caused by weak signals or interference. By using an advanced error correction algorithm, it reconstructs lost signal information to restore voice quality. Developed based on Broadcom’s proprietary signal enhancement algorithms, M-Stream is compatible with both GSM and WCDMA networks. It significantly improves speech clarity, especially under poor network conditions.
For GSM networks, M-Stream typically provides a 2–3 dB improvement in signal-to-noise ratio across a wide frequency range, including weak signals and interference. On WCDMA networks, it offers around 1–1.5 dB improvement. Using the PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) standard, M-Stream can boost speech intelligibility by 0.5–1 PESQ unit in poorly performing channels. These enhancements not only improve user satisfaction but also increase the number of users a network can support.
M-Stream complements existing signal enhancement technologies rather than replacing them. Broadcom has already implemented DARP (Downstream Advanced Reception Performance), which helps reduce interference on public channels. When combined with M-Stream, especially in poor GSM conditions, this can lead to up to a 6 dB improvement in signal-to-noise ratio. This allows operators to expand network coverage and support more users without increasing power consumption.
The BCM2133 is a single-chip baseband processor that supports EDGE, GPRS, and GSM, offering broadband-like connectivity with low power usage. Its compact size makes it ideal for developing affordable EDGE phones, smartphones, PC cards, and embedded modules. The BCM2133 supports EDGE class 12, enabling data transfer rates above 200 kbps for both download and upload. It also includes integrated interfaces and drivers, allowing direct connection to components like microphones, speakers, SIM cards, and headphones.
In addition to its Bluetooth capabilities, the Treo 680 features Broadcom’s BCM2045 Bluetooth chip. This advanced single-chip solution is designed for mobile devices, computers, and peripherals. It excels in key areas such as power efficiency, board space, RF performance, and cost, outperforming competitors in each category. The BCM2045 is highly integrated, reducing peripheral components by about 50% and minimizing PCB footprint. It also supports Bluetooth EDR (Extended Data Rate), offering 3 Mbps bandwidth for wireless applications and supporting a wide range of Bluetooth profiles, including those for advanced multimedia.
