Volkswagen is reportedly considering producing electric vehicles in its U.S. factories, though the move has not been officially confirmed yet. During the Los Angeles Auto Show, Volkswagen executives from Germany and the U.S. revealed that the underutilized Chattanooga plant is the top candidate for the company’s upcoming electric vehicle lineup. According to the Wall Street Journal, CEO Herbert Diess mentioned that producing EVs in the U.S. is a possibility, adding, “We haven’t made a formal decision yet, but the Chattanooga factory is our first choice.â€
A recent image shared by a blog source shows the potential shift, highlighting the Chattanooga plant as a key location for future electric vehicle production.
Hinrich Woebcken, CEO of Hirsch Group’s U.S. division, told reporters that Volkswagen plans to use the MEB electric platform to develop at least four models. Controlling costs through efficient production will be essential. The first model, the ID Crozz, is an all-wheel-drive crossover expected to launch in 2020. It promises 302 horsepower and a range of up to 300 miles.
Following the ID Crozz, Volkswagen aims to introduce the electric version of the iconic ID Buzz in 2022, along with a hatchback and sedan. These models will share the MEB platform, allowing them to be manufactured in the same facility. The company hopes to sell 1 million electric vehicles annually by 2025, moving away from its reliance on diesel engines.
The Chattanooga plant currently produces the Atlas and Passat. While the Atlas performed well upon its release, the Passat struggled in the U.S. market as consumer preferences shifted toward crossovers. As of October this year, Passat sales in the U.S. dropped by 8% year-on-year to 54,567 units. This decline may further push Volkswagen to repurpose the plant for electric vehicle production.
