LED industry, revealing "bottleneck" and suffering from subsidies "dependency"

The LED industry has long benefited from policy subsidies, which helped it grow rapidly. However, the question remains: what will happen if these subsidies are removed? This is a major challenge facing the current LED sector. Overreliance on government support has created dependency among companies, and the sudden withdrawal of such support could lead to instability. For years, government backing enabled LED lighting to quickly replace traditional incandescent bulbs. With its energy-saving and eco-friendly advantages, LED lighting became more affordable for the public, lighting up homes across the country. The "13th Five-Year Plan" set ambitious goals for the industry, aiming to reach a trillion yuan in output by 2020. [Image: LED industry, revealing "bottleneck" and suffering from subsidies "dependency"] While subsidies have driven rapid growth, they have also become a key obstacle to sustainable development. If policies shift, how will the industry adapt? Will prices remain accessible to consumers? This uncertainty now looms over the sector like the Sword of Damocles. According to Xu Qiang, director of the National Energy Conservation Center, China has largely phased out incandescent bulbs over 60 watts, with their market share now below 5%. Through the “Energy-Saving Products for the Benefits of the People” initiative, over 780 million high-efficiency LED lighting products have been promoted nationwide, bringing real benefits to the public while contributing significantly to energy conservation and environmental protection. However, the fast-growing semiconductor lighting industry has started to face bottlenecks. Excessive subsidies have led to dependency, with some companies expanding production capacity blindly. This resulted in overcapacity, price wars, and reduced investment in R&D. In 2015, the LED industry faced a “cold winter,” with nearly 4,000 small and medium enterprises shutting down. In recent years, some regions have begun to reduce or phase out subsidies in the LED sector. If companies need to cover the resulting financial gap, would consumers still be willing to pay higher prices for LED lights? To avoid this scenario, the industry must plan ahead and prepare for a more self-sustaining future. Experts urge China’s semiconductor lighting industry to accelerate innovation and enhance competitiveness. Only by doing so can the sector maintain its market influence and ensure long-term success. Despite the challenges, the future of the semiconductor lighting industry remains promising, as long as it adapts and evolves beyond reliance on subsidies.
