KIONix, a subsidiary of the ROHM Group, recently held a press conference in Beijing to introduce its latest line of shock and acceleration detection solutions tailored for industrial and sports fitness equipment. The newly launched KX222 and KX224 are compact acceleration sensors capable of detecting high g-values, with a range of up to ±32g (where 1g equals 9.8 m/s²). These sensors are available in small LGA packages—2x2mm² and 3x3mm²—which make them ideal for space-constrained, high-performance applications.
During the event, Zhang Wei, representative from KIONix’s Shanghai office, shared insights into the development behind these new products. He explained that the decision to focus on high-g capabilities was driven by current market demands. While consumer electronics typically use sensors with a maximum range of 16g, emerging applications such as motion tracking in sports equipment often require higher sensitivity. For example, in golf swing detectors or soccer shoe trajectory systems, instantaneous accelerations can surpass 16g but rarely exceed 32g. Industrial equipment, such as motors and compressors, also frequently encounter short bursts of high-g forces, making reliable detection essential.
One of the main challenges in designing high-g sensors is maintaining low noise levels. Some existing products reach up to 200g, but their noise levels rise significantly, leading to false readings during normal movement. In contrast, KIONix’s KX222/KX224 maintains noise performance comparable to earlier models, ensuring accurate detection of even subtle movements.
Another key feature of the KX222/KX224 is its high mechanical resonance frequency of up to 6kHz. This helps prevent damage caused by resonance when the vibration frequency of the system matches the sensor’s natural frequency. By raising this frequency, the sensors can effectively monitor industrial motors, such as those in washing machines, air conditioners, and other appliances. They can detect abnormal vibrations in real time and even identify specific issues like motor coil failures or power instability—making them highly valuable for home appliance manufacturers.
The KX222/KX224 also supports an impressive data output rate of 25.6kHz. According to Shannon’s theorem, sampling at twice the signal bandwidth ensures accurate data capture. With a sampling rate four times the maximum bandwidth, these sensors provide oversampling that preserves all relevant information without loss.
In terms of connectivity, the sensors offer dual interface support: I2C (up to 3.4MHz) for consumer electronics and SPI (up to 10MHz) for industrial applications. They also include an internal 2KB buffer that can be configured as FIFO or FILO, along with hardware-based wake-up, tap detection, and motion recognition features. These advanced capabilities make the KX222/KX224 a versatile solution for a wide range of applications, from wearable devices to industrial monitoring systems.
