In today's rapidly evolving technological landscape, people are increasingly focused on their quality of life, health, and safety. Lighting is no longer just about visibility—it has become a key factor in enhancing comfort, well-being, and overall living standards. The growing awareness of the "invisible" effects of lighting on human health has led to new demands for safer and more health-conscious lighting solutions.
A recent development in this field took place in Suzhou, where the national key research and development plan “Strategic Advanced Electronic Materials†launched a groundbreaking project titled “Photobiomechanism and Application Research for Health Lighting.†With a total budget of 28.55 million yuan, the project is led by the Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology’s High Technology Research and Development Center.
This initiative brings together leading experts from multiple disciplines, including optical engineering, human performance, and clinical medicine. It also involves top semiconductor lighting companies across China, creating a strong foundation for both technological innovation and industrial development. The team includes members who have previously led over ten national science and technology projects during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan†period, and they’ve expanded their network by incorporating additional top-tier laboratories and research centers.
The project follows an integrated innovation chain model, covering basic research, application development, and the construction of a comprehensive standard system. By understanding the photobiological effects of semiconductor lighting, researchers aim to develop objective physiological evaluation methods that enhance the health benefits of lighting products. This will eventually lead to the industrialization of health-oriented lighting and the creation of a “light health†standard framework.
One of the key innovations comes from Dr. Shi Guohua, a researcher at the Suzhou Medical Institute, who is working on developing a multi-functional testing platform. He highlighted the importance of measuring various physiological parameters of the eye, such as refraction, modulation transfer function, and point spread function. While imported equipment can provide quick results, it often lacks open-source data and traceability. To address this, the team has developed its own instruments, allowing for more comprehensive research and future standard-setting.
Dr. Shi envisions a future where a virtual visual brain—powered by deep neural networks—can assess light environments efficiently. The project aims to collect data from over 12,000 samples for a semiconductor light photo-affecting physiological database and more than 1,000 samples for a photobio-affecting pathology database.
In terms of practical applications, the research team plans to file 11–12 invention patents and develop at least three sets of health-focused semiconductor lighting products. These will be tested in real-world environments such as factories, schools, residential areas, and medical facilities. The ultimate goal is to enable individuals and organizations to customize lighting systems tailored to their specific needs.
Cao Jianlin, former Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, expressed hope that the project would not only produce soft outputs like standards but also deliver tangible “hard outputs,†such as health-focused lighting fixtures and evaluation instruments. Tang Yuguo, Director of the Suzhou Medical Institute, emphasized that the project will significantly boost the health attributes of semiconductor lighting products, supporting market growth and consumer demand.
It is estimated that this initiative could drive the industry to over 50 billion yuan in scale, helping China break through the homogenization competition in the semiconductor lighting sector and establish itself as a leader in “people-centric lighting.â€
