Ionic liquid is called "safe blood" of lithium battery

The research and development of a new type of ionic liquid electrolyte and its application in lithium ion batteries completed by the ionic liquid cleaning process and energy-saving innovation team of the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have recently passed the scientific and technological achievement identification organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The project has formed a new type of ionic liquid electrolyte technology with independent intellectual property rights, established a large-scale preparation technology and complete equipment for ionic liquid electrolyte, which has reached the international advanced level and has good prospects for promotion and application.

According to the ionic liquid cleaning process and energy-saving innovation team based on the accumulation of ionic liquid foundation and application, the first to apply ionic liquid to the electrolyte. With the support of the national "973", "863", pilot special projects, and hospital cooperation projects, they have developed two types of new electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries that use ionic liquids as additives and co-solvents. Ionic liquid additives solve the shortcomings of traditional additives such as poor thermal stability, poor high-pressure resistance and single function; ionic liquid co-solvent electrolytes not only improve the safety performance of the battery, but also greatly improve the battery's high temperature and cycle performance. These two types of ionic liquid electrolytes have excellent performance after the application of 18650 cylindrical batteries and flexible packaging batteries. In addition, the project also established a new ionic liquid electrolyte production line.

The electrolyte is described as the "blood" of the lithium-ion battery, which is responsible for the transport of ions during the charge and discharge process and has an irreplaceable role. Lithium batteries are widely used, and are rapidly penetrating into fields such as automobiles, energy storage, aerospace, and military industry. The output value in 2012 reached 71.8 billion yuan, and the output value in 2020 is expected to reach 230 billion yuan. However, the current commercial lithium-ion battery electrolytes all use carbonate-based organic solvents. The main components have remained basically unchanged for more than 20 years. There are shortcomings such as low temperature easy to solidify, high temperature volatile, easy to burn, and poor stability. The new requirements of electronic products on batteries are more difficult to meet the requirements of batteries in terms of capacity, life, safety, etc. in the fields of electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage. Therefore, the development of a new generation of electrolyte is an urgent need for the development of modern society, and is also the research frontier and hot spot in the international scientific and technological community.

The new generation of ionic liquid electrolyte provides new opportunities for the development of high-performance lithium batteries, and at the same time opens up new ways for the upgrading of supercapacitors and large-scale energy storage systems, which will provide strong support for the development of electric vehicles and new energy industries.

It is reported that American Ford and other related companies have shown great interest in the research and development results of the project, and have launched project cooperation to further promote the industrial application of ionic liquid electrolytes.
