October 14 — In a surprising move, the Nokia brand has made a comeback in the mobile phone market. Once the dominant force in the early 2000s, Nokia is now making a name for itself again with a mix of smartphones and feature phones. One of its most popular models is the Nokia 3310, a modern replica of the classic device that still holds a special place in many people’s hearts.
According to Peka Lentara, an executive from HMC Global, the company launched its first set of Nokia-branded phones at the Mobile World Congress in February this year. Since then, the brand has sold "millions" of smartphones and tens of millions of feature phones. Lentara shared these figures during an interview on September 2, based on data covering four different Nokia smartphone models.
IDC estimates that the Nokia brand currently holds a 0.4% share in the global mobile phone market, ranking fifth in Finland. The research firm also reported that Nokia sold 1.5 million smartphones in the first half of the year.
Analysts have tracked Nokia's growth closely. In the first quarter of this year, the company sold around 100,000 smartphones, all available only in the Chinese market. By the second quarter, sales jumped to 1.4 million units, and by the third quarter, they reached 2.5 million. With the holiday season approaching, analysts predict that Nokia could sell as many as 3.5 million smartphones in the fourth quarter.
So far this year, Nokia has sold approximately 4 million smartphones in the first three quarters. Taking into account seasonal demand and strong consumer interest, experts are optimistic that the brand will hit 10 million smartphone sales in 2017. This resurgence shows that even after years of absence, Nokia is still capable of making a meaningful impact in the competitive mobile industry.
