Since the renovation began on June 18, 2022, the Sichuan Science and Technology Museum in Tianfu Square has been closed for over a year and four months. During this time, many science enthusiasts from Chengdu missed their favorite place of learning and exploration. Fans eagerly awaited the opening of the new building, while parents and visitors often asked when it would reopen.
It is now reported that the newly renovated Sichuan Science and Technology Museum, which cost 120 million yuan, has been completed after more than 400 days of work. The museum is now ready to welcome the public. On November 1st, a reporter was granted access to the new facility before its official opening.
Upon entering the new museum, visitors are immediately struck by the thoughtful design, engaging exhibits, and improved facilities. According to the museum's staff, they aimed to create an environment where people feel a sense of change, participation, and discovery. The new space integrates cutting-edge technologies like AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality), offering interactive experiences that bring science to life.
For example, in the aerospace exhibition hall, visitors can simulate flying a passenger aircraft, experiencing different flight scenarios such as bad weather and emergency handling. Another highlight is the 360-degree bicycle, where riders can spin upside down, creating a thrilling sensation of weightlessness.
The museum also features a "Robot World" exhibition, showcasing various robots, including a robot band, a robotic surgeon, and a robot sales shop. In the Robot Theatre, six arm robots perform alongside fashionably dressed robotic musicians, creating a dynamic and entertaining show lasting 30 minutes.
The new museum is organized around thematic floors. The first floor explores space, water, and the future, while the second focuses on knowledge discovery. The third floor highlights life, survival, and living, and the fourth is dedicated to nurturing future talents through innovation labs and creative classrooms.
In addition to the interactive exhibits, the museum offers educational experiences like the Nutrition Supermarket, where visitors can scan food items to learn about their nutritional content, and the Baicaotang area, where they can explore traditional Chinese medicine.
Despite the removal of some outdated exhibits, popular classics such as the dulcimer robots and face-changing robots have been preserved or upgraded. For instance, the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project display now features automated models, making it more interactive and user-friendly.
Chen Lin, the head of design at the museum, emphasized that safety and long-term functionality were key considerations. Industrial-grade robotic arms are used in the robot exhibitions to ensure consistent performance and reduce maintenance issues.
Originally opened in 2006, the Sichuan Science and Technology Museum became a beloved destination for families and students. Over the years, however, aging exhibits made it less appealing. After three years of planning and careful design, the museum has finally reopened, aiming to become a modern, engaging, and educational hub for the community.
