Polysilicon can not ignore the semiconductor market because of the hot PV

As the main raw material of solar photovoltaic cells, the development prospects of polysilicon are closely related to the application of photovoltaics. On a global scale, the rise and fall of the solar cell market has directly determined the upstream link, the fate of the polysilicon industry. However, for a country's polysilicon industry, it is not only necessary to pay attention to the relationship between supply and demand in the market, but it is necessary to incorporate the "problem" of energy conservation and environmental protection in the polysilicon production process into the overall development plan of the polysilicon industry.

In the next five years, the pace of polysilicon production capacity expansion in China will continue, but it must also span several thresholds.

The first threshold is environmental protection. The use of the modified Siemens process for the production of polysilicon and the treatment of by-product silicon tetrachloride is the most troublesome problem. Whether it is the recovery and reuse of by-products or the comprehensive utilization of the chemical industry, it faces many problems. At present, it seems that using cold-hydrogenation technology with lower energy consumption to convert silicon tetrachloride to trichlorosilane is the most feasible solution. However, cold-hydrogenation technology is more difficult and requires a lot of manpower and material resources for R&D.

The second threshold is energy consumption. The high energy consumption of the modified Siemens method has always been criticized. Some international giants in the polysilicon field have set up factories in the United States. The reason for this is also the low price of electricity in the United States. In order to get rid of the "high energy consumption" hat, there are many companies continue to explore new process routes such as silane method, metallurgical method, etc.; but depending on the new process can stably produce polysilicon materials in line with the demand of the photovoltaic industry, yet to be used in the production of photovoltaic cells Practice testing of links and applications.

The third threshold is the scale. To maximize benefits, we must have a considerable scale. In 2009, the state limited the production capacity of polysilicon production to 3,000 tons/year, which should be said to have certain guiding significance.

We must soberly realize that the polysilicon industry in the future will surely exhibit cruel competition on a global scale. Chinese companies face the greatest number of international giants. Whether it is environmental protection, energy saving or production scale, the final impact is the production cost of polysilicon. Only by achieving low pollution, low energy consumption, and large-scale mass production can companies be able to compete with international giants.

During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, the government is not faced with the question of whether or not to support polysilicon enterprises to expand their production capacity, but how to help them clear up the obstacles on the way while expanding their production capacity. For the sake of environmental protection and energy conservation, the government can provide special funds to support it. On the scale of production capacity, we should focus on supporting two or three leading companies in the country to help them enhance their international competitiveness.

During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, China's polysilicon companies can not ignore the semiconductor market because of the hot PV market, but continue to try to develop and industrialize the electronic-grade polysilicon. Considering that thin-film solar cells have always challenged the dominance of crystalline silicon cells, the development of electronic-grade polysilicon is not only to solve the raw material problems for the semiconductor industry, but also to take precautions and find new ways for the sustainable development of polysilicon enterprises.
