Polysilicon depends heavily on imports

In November this year, China’s polysilicon imports reached 6,153 tons, an increase of 159.8% year-on-year, a 45% increase from the previous month, and it also set a record high of 4,757 tons imported in September this year. In the first three quarters of this year, China imported a total of 31,500 tons of polysilicon, and the cumulative import volume in the previous November reached 41.89 million tons. It is expected that this year's imports will reach about 45,000 tons. According to preliminary estimates, the actual production of polysilicon this year is about 40,000 tons, which means that 50% of domestic polysilicon is dependent on imports this year.

According to analysis by international research institution iSuppli, this year's global PV installed capacity will exceed 100% year-on-year, reaching 15.7GW. The ultra-predicted growth in the market has caused a surge in demand for polysilicon this year. In addition, some domestic photovoltaic industry sources told the media that it is expected to maintain growth this year next year, polysilicon may be tight supply next year, and hope that the country liberalize the implementation of polysilicon project restrictions.

In this regard, Lin Boqiang, director of the China Energy Economic Research Center at Xiamen University, said in an interview that China's polysilicon production capacity is large, and many companies continue to expand production capacity this year, which is the main reason for the increase in imports of polysilicon. However, Lin Boqiang does not agree with China's tight supply of polysilicon next year, saying that there may be excess. According to his analysis, at the end of the year, domestic PV manufacturers importing polysilicon should mainly be preparing for next year's production, and most of the photovoltaic materials produced will be exported to Europe. However, starting from October, affected by the economic crisis, European countries have cut their high subsidies for the solar industry, and many photovoltaic power projects have been suspended. Lin Boqiang expects that the demand for photovoltaic materials in the European market will decline. Unless the economy improves, it will not be very Fast recovery.
