Samsung Electronics withdraws its e-paper business due to cost issues

According to foreign media reports, Samsung Electronics stated on Monday that due to cost issues, it has recently decided to withdraw from the e-paper business. However, a Samsung spokesperson said that Samsung Electronics has still not completely left the e-book reader market and plans to launch an electronic reading device with a liquid crystal display next year.

Samsung spokesman Kim Se-hoon said that we will launch a new e-book reader next year. However, this e-book reader will use a liquid crystal display instead of electronic paper. However, a Samsung spokesman declined to say when the company stopped production of electronic paper. He is also unwilling to explain the size or other technical specifications of Samsung's future e-book readers.

Electronic paper is a display technology that mimics plain paper. This kind of display is still very clear under the sunlight, has a very wide viewing angle, and even reading for a long time will not put pressure on the eyes. However, the production cost of electronic paper is higher than that of liquid crystal displays, and the suppliers are limited.

LCD screens are cheaper than electronic paper and can use a variety of colors. Unlike electronic paper technology, electronic paper is currently only black and white.

Samsung Electronics earlier said that it plans to launch the Galaxy Tab Tablet PC with the Android worry system before December this year to challenge Apple’s iPad. However, an Apple spokesperson said that the forthcoming eBook reader will not affect the production of the Galaxy Tab.

Samsung Electronics’ rival LG Display Corp. is still betting on electronic paper used by companies such as Amazon. LG Display and South Korea e-book maker Iriver set up an e-book joint venture in China. This company will start production next month.
