How do they manage to earn $1 million in VR games?

Recently, the Los Angeles startup Survios said that the VR game developed by them, Raw Data, has exceeded one million US dollars for only one month since its release. Also breaking through $1 million in revenue is the VR game The Gallery—Episode1: Call of The Starseed, developed by Canadian company Cloudhead Games.

The Gallery was released in April this year for $30 and was announced in August to be bundled with Vive helmets. But before bundled sales, Cloudhead has been profitable enough to support them in developing their next work. The company’s CEO Denny Unger said, “ This shows that people are willing to pay for high-quality games. ”

In Raw Data, players need to change their postures to obtain weapons and play against the enemy. This is also where the game shines. At the same time, because it can be played online, this game is sought after by offline VR merchants in China. It is not an exaggeration to be a "star game." On June 14th this year, the game landed on the Steam platform for $40 and plans to update it 10 times to complete the game. However, it now appears that developers also plan to add more content updates.

"We will do our best to keep updating this game," said James Iliff, Survios co-founder and chief creative officer. "This is just the beginning for us and for the industry as a whole. Profitability requires the development of deeper and richer game content. Consumers appreciate such works, so they will respond by purchasing games."

Survios's earliest office was at the Mixed Reality Lab of USC (University of Southern California, USA), where Oculus founder Palmer Luckey had stayed before setting up the company. After Zuckerberg announced in 2014 that it had acquired Oculus for US$2 billion, Survios had also obtained 4 million dollars in financing, and it had also received a grand investment.

The Gallery is divided into multiple sections for publication

Speaking of Cloudhead, return to the Oculus Rift DK1. In 2013, Cloudhead launched crowdfunding and raised over 80,000 U.S. dollars. Although located in Canada, The Gallery won a set of DK1 helmets at the VRLA show in Los Angeles, enabling them to successfully develop games.

What the two companies have in common is that developers spend a lot of time focusing on the game itself, rarely announce progress to players, and solve problems continuously. In the two VR games, the player's hands can naturally move. Although in the real space, the player's range of movement is very small, in the game world, the player can move around in a wide range.

Iliff said that Raw Data's development number is 16, and Unger revealed that Cloudhead's developer is 19 people. Currently they are looking for other projects.

Raw Data can only use the HTC Vive experience now, and if it is released to the Oculus Store, it may be more popular. Cloudhead is waiting for the release of Oculus Touch, but Survios has not yet officially confirmed whether it will support Rift or publish it on the Oculus Store. Obviously, once Touch is released, there may be more game support and players will have more choices.

"This is obvious," Iliff said. "If you publish on as many platforms as possible, there will be more revenue."

Some VR developers choose to bundle with multiple platforms, while others choose a single platform that will fund game development and make it an exclusive game. When The Gallery was released in April, the game was divided into several sections. Survios waited several months before Vive released the game. Raw Data was developed as an "early game" with a series of core advanced games and posted on Steam. platform. The Gallery sells Vive built-in games, Survios set a higher price in advance, and lists clear updates for players.

"We want to give the work a chance to shine its light and get clear data," Iliff said.

In such a short period of time, the two games exceeded one million downloads. Perhaps we have reason to believe that the developing VR ecosystem may be healthy enough to support the development of small VR teams and sell high-quality interactive works.
