At the recent Beijing International Auto Show, SsangYong Motor, a brand renowned for its focus on the SUV market, unveiled its latest offering, the Tuling, which has generated significant anticipation as it aims to revitalize its presence in China. With a price range of $139,800 to $239,800, this new model carries substantial importance for the company’s future in the competitive Chinese automotive landscape.
The exterior design of the Tuling XLV is particularly youthful and modern, featuring a floating roof that adds a contemporary touch. Although some may have initial reservations about its styling, the overall aesthetic remains appealing. It shares a strong resemblance to the previously launched Tivoli in terms of its front and rear design, reflecting the brand's signature family styling.
In reality, the Tuling XLV can be seen as an extended version of the Tivoli. Its dimensions—4495mm in length, 1795mm in width, and 1590mm in height—are 300mm longer than those of the Tivoli, making it more spacious and suitable for larger families or those seeking extra legroom.
Stepping inside, the interior design exudes a technical sophistication. The large multifunctional steering wheel wrapped in leather offers excellent grip, while the center console is thoughtfully laid out. A prominent central LCD screen adds a high-tech feel, and the arrangement of the air conditioning buttons is both functional and user-friendly. Standard features across the range include a vehicle stability system, hill-start assist, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheels, and GPS navigation systems, showcasing a commendable level of standard equipment.
Under the hood, the Tuling comes in both diesel and gasoline variants. The gasoline model is powered by a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine, delivering up to 94 kW (128 PS) at 6000 rpm and a peak torque of 160 Nm at 4600 rpm. On the other hand, the diesel variant employs a 1.6-liter turbocharged diesel engine, producing a maximum output of 85 kW (115 PS) between 3400 and 4000 rpm and a robust torque of 300 Nm from 1500 to 2500 rpm. Both engines pair well with either a six-speed manual or an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the Tuling will offer options for either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive configurations to cater to diverse customer needs.
The suspension setup incorporates a MacPherson strut front independent suspension and a torsion beam rear suspension system, providing a balance of comfort and handling. As a front-wheel-drive vehicle with a unibody construction, it prioritizes practicality and fuel efficiency without compromising safety, as evidenced by its manual parking brake system.
Overall, the Tuling represents SsangYong's strategic effort to reassert itself in the Chinese SUV market. While its design may not appeal to everyone, its competitive pricing, comprehensive feature set, and strong powertrain options position it as a viable choice for buyers looking for a reliable and stylish SUV.
