LiDAR - Light Detection And Ranging, also known as Lidar, is a measurement technique that uses a laser to illuminate a target to detect distance. Sweep is such a 3D printed LiDAR scanner that can be easily installed on drones, robots or other mobile devices. The developer of this product is Scance.io, the first product released by the company. The company launched product crowdfunding on Kickstarter this month.

Scance.io is a Bay Area startup founded by Tyson Messori and Kent Williams, both of which have a rich background in robotics. “A few years ago we set up a product development company and we found that the lack of economical and reliable LiDAR sensors hindered the development of complex, mobile functional robots in the consumer space.” So they decided to do it themselves. This is what we have seen as the origin of the first true consumer-grade LiDAR scanner Sweep.

In terms of product design, Sweep's outer casing is intended to highlight high-quality minimalist design ideas. The company described it as "quality like Apple, and prices are like from Amazon." This is because the two entrepreneurs have fully used 3D printing technology in the process of opening the product, which saves a lot of money. Naturally, consumers also benefit: Tyson and Kent set the price of Sweep at $249. This is quite amazing because the average price of LiDAR sensors in the current market is about $8,000.

According to reports, Sweep weighs only 120 grams, scans 40 meters, has a high background light adaptability, "immunity against malicious interference", and can collect 500 points per second with an accuracy of 1 cm.

So, what is the use of this low-cost lidar sensor? First of all, this device is very suitable for being mounted on a drone, because a big problem with the drone is that it is impossible to determine the position of the operator, and it is easy to hit something and land on the ground. According to the company's website, this special sensor can operate in a sunny environment with a 360-degree horizontal field of view. It is ideal for evading obstacles, measuring the environment, and providing spatial size measurements.

"Our main goal now is to understand what people who have never used LiDAR before are ready to do it," the two founders said.

Scance reportedly used Sculpteo's 3D printing section in the development of the product. The latter will be able to complete 3D printing orders submitted by Scance within three days. These prototypes may use traditional manufacturing services for more than three weeks. This greatly shortens their iterative process and enables them to launch Kickstarter activities as planned.
