USB to I2S bridge chip provides a simple turnkey solution for digital audio design

-Silicon Labs' latest USB connection solution frees developers from the complexity of firmware development-

Beijing, China-April 20, 2017- Silicon Labs (also known as "Core Science and Technology", NASDAQ: SLAB) has recently launched a fixed-function audio bridge device to transfer digital data between USB and I2S serial bus interfaces Audio data provides a simple and complete solution. The new CP2615 digital audio bridge simplifies the connection from USB to I2S, which effectively shortens the time to market for various power-sensitive and space-constrained USB audio applications based on Android, Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems. These Applications include headphones, headsets, speakers, MP3 accessories, navigation systems, and point-of-sale (POS) devices.

Although the USB connection may seem simple to consumers, USB audio design is very challenging, and developers need a quick and easy way to add a USB connection to their audio accessories. Silicon Labs' CP2615 digital audio bridge provides a plug-and-play USB-to-I2S connection solution that does not require USB audio knowledge or protocol expertise, allowing developers to focus on their final applications rather than firmware development.

The single-chip CP2615 audio bridge is packaged in a compact 5mm x 5mm QFN-32 package, making it ideal for space-constrained printed circuit boards (PCBs) in portable audio applications. The fully functional CP2615 device integrates a USB 2.0 full-speed controller, USB transceiver, on-chip oscillator, I2S audio interface, I2C control interface, and embedded flash memory for storage device configuration. This high level of integration eliminates the need for off-chip components, significantly reducing PCB size and BOM cost.

The CP2615 audio bridge provides a low-cost solution for low-end and mid-range headphones that require a sampling rate of 48kHz. This small size device is also ideal for USB accessories, suitable for high-end headset consumers who use analog jacks. Many new smartphone designs are eliminating analog headphone jacks and only providing a USB connector to support charging and audio connections. Therefore, consumers need to purchase simple, low-cost accessories to connect the 3.5mm analog jack to the USB-C to Micro USB adapter, so that they can continue to use their existing headphones.

Silicon Labs' popular Simplicity Studio development environment includes a GUI-based Xpress Configurator tool that can simplify USB audio design. When using the Xpress Configurator tool, developers can configure and customize their digital audio applications in three simple steps: connect the CP2615 bridge device, configure USB and audio parameters, and program the device. This configuration tool also allows developers to take advantage of Silicon Labs' flexible factory programming options to speed time to market.

Tom Pannell, senior marketing director of Internet of Things products at Silicon Labs, said: "Silicon Labs has insight into all the details of USB development. We will transfer years of USB expertise through plug-and-play USB connectivity solutions (such as the new CP2615 audio bridge chip). For developers. If you are developing a USB-based digital audio application, using Silicon Labs ’CP2615 device, Xpress Configurator tool and evaluation kit will greatly save time, effort and cost.”

Silicon Labs is a leading provider of USB connectivity solutions, offering a broad and flexible USB product family, including fixed-function devices and general-purpose 8-bit and 32-bit MCUs with on-chip USB controllers.

Price and availability

The CP2615 digital audio bridge is now in mass production and samples are available. The unit price of the CP2615 product starts at US $ 2.51 per 10,000 pieces.
