Vocal Processing: 8 professional tips to capture the best sound from the singer's voice

Achieving a flawless vocal performance isn't just about technical skill—it's also influenced by various human factors that can affect the final sound. In this article, Matt Vanacoro shares his top 8 tips based on his personal experience in the studio. Recording vocals is quite different from recording instruments like guitars, where you simply set up the gear, adjust the amp, and tune the strings. When it comes to mixing vocals, these 8 practical tips can help you get the best possible result.

1. Keep the singer hydrated at all times. Before a vocal session, make sure the singer has access to water throughout the process. Room temperature water is ideal—ice water might feel refreshing, but it can numb the throat and vocal cords, leading to a worse performance. If the singer feels uncomfortable, it’s their body signaling them to take a break.

2. Use MIDI guides for complex parts. While many professional singers prefer not to have guide tracks during lead vocal sessions, they can be incredibly useful for background vocals. Providing a MIDI reference helps the singer stay on pitch and in time, especially when the part is challenging. It gives them a clearer sense of where they should be in the mix, making the recording process smoother.

3. Control the room climate. A comfortable environment is crucial for vocalists. Unlike instrumentalists, who may push through discomfort, vocalists are more sensitive to physical conditions. If the room is too cold or hot, it can distract them and affect their performance. Do your best to create a pleasant and stable atmosphere for the singer.

4. Provide lyrics ahead of time. While we all hope the singer knows the words perfectly, sometimes it's better to give them the lyrics in advance rather than repeatedly correcting mistakes. This reduces stress and allows the singer to focus on delivering a great performance instead of struggling with the text.

5. Choose the right microphone. Selecting a mic for a singer is similar to choosing a guitar for a guitarist. Don’t assume a high-end condenser mic will always work best. Each singer has different needs, so test multiple options before recording. Some may need a dynamic mic like the RE20 if they're not comfortable with proximity effect. The right tool makes all the difference.

6. Be polite and patient. Even if you know more about audio engineering than the singer, treat them with respect. Dismissive or rude behavior can create tension and hinder creativity. Take the time to answer questions, no matter how basic they seem. Building trust between the artist and engineer is key to a successful session.

7. Adjust monitor levels to control dynamics. If the singer isn’t hitting the dynamics you want, try adjusting their headphone volume. Sometimes, they might not be singing loudly enough because they’re hearing their own voice too loud. Lowering the monitor volume can encourage a more natural performance. Similarly, if they’re peaking too much, reducing the level can help them stay within range.

8. Encourage rest and motivation. Singers often push themselves beyond their limits, trying to get the “perfect” take. But their bodies will signal when they need a break. Vocal cords can become strained, and fatigue can drastically affect the quality of the performance. Allow short breaks for hydration or rest. Let the singer do something quiet if needed—they might not realize they’re exhausted until it’s too late.

Creating a structured workflow for vocal sessions can save time and improve results. Keep track of what’s been done and what still needs to be recorded. Remember, every singer is unique, so flexibility is important. With open communication and proper preparation, you’ll be well on your way to capturing the best vocal performance possible.
