The world's first 10.5 generation line put into operation, BOE opened 8K display era

On December 20th, the world's first 10.5-generation TFT-LCD production line was officially launched ahead of schedule, marking a major breakthrough in the LCD panel industry and setting the stage for large-scale production of 8K display panels. This development is expected to reshape the future of high-resolution displays and push the boundaries of visual technology.

Constructed by BOE in Hefei back in 2015, this groundbreaking production line is not only the highest generation ever built but also the largest in terms of area and capacity. It can produce up to 120,000 glass substrates per month, making it one of the most advanced facilities in the global display industry. The project also represents the largest single investment in new equipment in the sector to date.

At the launch event and customer delivery ceremony, BOE Hefei showcased its latest 75-inch 8K TVs with both 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rates to key clients such as Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Skyworth, Konka, Hisense, Changhong, TPV, Xiaomi, and Haier. These ultra-high-definition displays are set to redefine consumer expectations and open up new possibilities in home entertainment and digital signage.

This milestone signals that 2018 could be the year when 8K technology truly takes off, with a growing number of 8K TVs entering the market. China is well-positioned to lead the global display industry by capitalizing on the 8K trend, leveraging its strong manufacturing base and technological innovation.

According to IHS, the 8K panel market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 111% over the next five years. In the large-screen segment (over 60 inches), 8K penetration is expected to reach 25% within that timeframe. This rapid expansion highlights the increasing demand for high-resolution displays across various industries, from consumer electronics to commercial applications.

In addition, an IHS report released in December highlighted that by 2020, BOE, China Star Optoelectronics, LG Display, and Foxconn will build seven new 10.5-generation production lines. This surge in capacity will further drive down costs and make 8K technology more accessible to consumers worldwide.

As the 10.5-generation pilot plant scales up production, prices for 65-inch and larger panels are expected to drop by around 5% each year. This decline in cost is likely to boost demand for high-end panels, with projections suggesting that the market could grow 2.5 times by 2022, reaching approximately 40 million units. The expansion of these 10.5-generation facilities will also help key players strengthen their positions in the global display market, driving innovation and competitiveness.
