The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world’s largest exhibition for consumer technology, is about to begin, drawing tech enthusiasts and industry leaders back to Las Vegas. As the event kicks off, the presence of Chinese companies and brands has become increasingly prominent, not just in the exhibition halls but also throughout the city—especially at the airport, where Chinese elements are on full display.
With over 1,551 exhibitors from China (excluding those operating under American names), China accounts for nearly 33% of all participants, making it one of the most active countries at this year's event. Guangdong-based companies alone make up 58.54% of these exhibitors, with Shenzhen hosting a staggering 666 firms. This reflects not only China’s strong manufacturing base but also its growing influence in global tech innovation.
According to Alex Ren, Managing Partner at BoomingStar Ventures, Chinese companies tend to showcase more application-ready products that are already poised for mass production, while American firms often focus on conceptual technologies. “Chinese companies come to CES not just to show off, but to learn, network, and understand the U.S. market,†he said. For investors, CES offers a unique opportunity to see the entire industry ecosystem in one place, from startups to established giants, and to get a clear picture of emerging trends.
For many investors, planning their CES experience is as important as attending itself. Before the event, they create detailed schedules, identifying key companies and technologies to explore, tracking industry experts, and attending exclusive meetings to gain deeper insights. For Ren, the four main areas of interest include autonomous vehicles, robotics, smart homes, and virtual reality (VR).
Autonomous vehicles have taken center stage at this year’s CES, with major automakers showcasing self-driving prototypes and new sensor technologies. Companies like Aptiv and Lyft offered test rides along fixed routes, while Navya’s driverless bus made headlines by operating in downtown Las Vegas. These buses, without steering wheels or pedals, can carry up to eight passengers and run continuously from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering free rides to the public.
In the smart home sector, the competition between voice assistants is heating up. Google has set up a large booth to promote its Assistant, following last year’s dominance of Amazon’s Alexa. According to Mao Hua, General Manager of Tencent’s Wuliang Cloud Speech Cloud, the rivalry between Google, Apple, and Amazon has intensified, with each company expanding into hardware and AI-driven services.
Meanwhile, the VR/AR industry, which faced a capital drought in recent years, is seeing renewed interest. Alex Ren believes that the current wave of investment is focused on solving core technical challenges in VR experiences. “Only the strongest companies have survived the downturn, and now there’s real potential for growth,†he said.
From the consumer perspective, expectations for CES are more practical. GIGadgets, a Silicon Valley-based tech media outlet, found that American users are particularly interested in transportation innovations, such as self-driving cars and robots that can solve real-world problems. However, consumer engagement with VR and AR remains limited due to the inconvenience of wearing headsets.
Huang Xiaqi, founder of GIGadgets, noted that while Chinese companies dominate the exhibition floor, U.S. firms often lead in underlying technology. “China excels in application and scale, while the U.S. focuses on innovation,†she observed. She also highlighted the unique strength of Shenzhen’s hardware ecosystem, which combines factories, solution providers, and young brands to produce much of the world’s tech hardware.
As AI continues to drive innovation across industries—from self-driving cars to smart speakers and chips—the future of human-machine interaction looks closer than ever. With so much happening at CES, it’s clear that this year’s event is shaping the next chapter of consumer technology.
