The world's first 10.5 generation line put into operation, BOE opened 8K display era

On December 20th, the world's first 10.5-generation TFT-LCD production line officially began operations ahead of schedule, marking a major breakthrough in the LCD panel industry and setting the stage for mass production of 8K display panels. This development signals a significant leap forward in display technology and opens up new possibilities for high-resolution consumer electronics.

Established in 2015 by BOE in Hefei, this groundbreaking production line is not only the highest generation line ever built but also the largest in terms of area capacity, with a design output of 120,000 glass substrates per month. Additionally, it represents the most significant single investment in new equipment for a single production line globally, showcasing BOE’s commitment to innovation and scale.

At the launch event for BOE Hefei’s 10.5-generation TFT-LCD line, Jingdong delivered 75-inch 8K 60Hz and 120Hz displays to major clients such as Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Skyworth, Konka, Hisense, Changhong, TPV, Xiaomi, and Haier. These ultra-high-definition displays are expected to redefine the market for large-screen entertainment and professional applications.

This milestone suggests that 2018 will be the year when 8K technology truly takes off, with a growing number of 8K TVs hitting the market. China is well-positioned to lead the global display industry through its rapid advancements in 8K technology, potentially setting new standards for visual quality worldwide.

According to IHS, the 8K panel market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 111% over the next five years. In the large-size panel segment (over 60 inches), 8K penetration is expected to reach 25%, indicating strong consumer demand for next-generation displays.

In addition, an IHS report from December highlighted that by 2020, BOE, China Star Optoelectronics, LG Display, and Foxconn plan to build seven new 10.5-generation production lines. This expansion reflects the industry’s confidence in the future of large-format, high-resolution displays.

As the 10.5-generation pilot plant increases output, prices for 65-inch and larger panels are expected to drop by about 5% annually. This trend is likely to boost demand for premium panels, with projections showing a 2.5-fold increase by 2022—reaching approximately 40 million units. These developments will help key players in the industry solidify their leadership positions in the global display market.
