Cadence Design Systems, Inc. and SMIC officially announced the launch of Cadence’s Radio Frequency (RF) Design Methodology Kit into China’s RF circuit design market in November. As part of the collaboration, SMIC will develop a process design kit (PDK) that supports Cadence’s RF solutions and aims to complete the test chip by the end of 2006. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the capabilities of local RF designers.
By the end of 2006, customers will gain access to a 0.18-micron CMOS RF process design kit. In addition, Cadence and SMIC will jointly introduce training programs focused on RF circuit design and provide expert guidance on the suitability of the RF PDKs for various applications. This partnership is designed to empower Chinese engineers with the tools and knowledge needed to achieve high-performance integrated circuits while reducing design cycles and improving predictability.
Paul Ouyang, Vice President of SMIC’s Design Services Division, emphasized the importance of this collaboration: “The wireless process involves numerous specialized technologies. A comprehensive design kit with proven solutions and tools will greatly benefit our customers. Our partnership with Cadence in RF design will enable domestic customers to create and deliver high-quality RF devices.†He also expressed optimism about future collaboration, stating that SMIC hopes to offer RF solutions for 0.13-micron and 90-nm CMOS processes.
The RF Design Methodology Kit includes a reference design for an 802.11 b/g WLAN radio transceiver, along with a full set of chip-on-chip, chip-, and system-level test benches, simulation setups, test planning tools, and RF design and analysis solutions. It features adaptive training modules and focuses on well-organized RF circuit design, overall chip validation, modeling, circuit simulation, parasitic extraction, re-simulation, and inductive synthesis. The kit also helps designers improve their ability to measure and model integrated circuits within complex system environments.
Jan Willis, Deputy General Manager of Cadence’s Senior Industry Alliance, said, “We are excited to collaborate with SMIC to help Chinese RF design customers enhance the quality and productivity of their RF devices.†He added, “In 2007, we plan to expand our support by offering training courses and RF adaptation programs to customers across China.â€
