Cadence Design Systems, Inc. and SMIC announced a strategic collaboration in November to introduce Cadence’s Radio Frequency (RF) Design Methodology Kit to the Chinese RF circuit design market. As part of this partnership, SMIC will develop a process design kit (PDK) that is fully compatible with Cadence’s RF solutions and aims to complete a test chip by the end of 2006. This initiative marks a significant step forward in supporting local RF design capabilities in China.
By the end of 2006, customers will gain access to a 0.18-micron CMOS RF process design kit. In addition to the PDK, Cadence and SMIC will jointly launch training programs focused on RF circuit design, offering guidance to Chinese designers on how to effectively utilize these RF process design kits. These efforts are designed to empower local engineers with the knowledge and tools needed to create high-performance RF chips.
This collaboration is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and accuracy of RF design cycles. By providing integrated tools and comprehensive support, it ensures that design intent is met more reliably, reducing both time and risk in the development process. Moreover, the two companies plan to offer ongoing training to their clients, ensuring they stay up-to-date with the latest RF design methodologies.
Paul Ouyang, Vice President of SMIC’s Design Services Division, emphasized the importance of this partnership: “The wireless design process involves many complex technologies. A design kit that includes recommended solutions and tools can greatly benefit our customers. Our collaboration with Cadence in RF design will help domestic customers develop and deliver high-quality RF devices.†He also expressed confidence in the synergy between Cadence’s full-custom RF circuit design technology and SMIC’s CMOS RF process design kit, stating that it would combine quality and productivity to drive customer success. Looking ahead, SMIC hopes to expand its offerings to include RF solutions for 0.13-micron and 90-nm CMOS processes.
The Radio Frequency Design Methodology Kit includes a comprehensive set of resources, such as an 802.11 b/g WLAN radio transceiver reference design, chip-on-chip, chip- and system-level test benches, simulation setups, test plans, and RF design and analysis tools. It also features adaptive training modules. The kit emphasizes well-organized RF circuit design, overall chip validation, modeling, circuit simulation, parasitic extraction, re-simulation, and inductive synthesis. Additionally, it supports system-level modeling and testing, helping designers better understand and measure integrated circuits within larger systems.
Jan Willis, Deputy General Manager of Cadence’s Senior Industry Alliance, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We are excited to collaborate with SMIC to help customers in China’s RF design market improve the quality and productivity of their RF devices.†He added that in 2007, Cadence aims to provide customers with training courses and RF adaptation support to further strengthen their design capabilities.
