HTC and Ali reached a cooperation to promote VR equipment in the Mainland by Alibaba Cloud

Beijing time on August 11th news, according to the "Fortune" magazine online version, HTC has signed a cooperation agreement with Alibaba Group. According to the agreement, the virtual reality (VR) department established by HTC will use Ali's cloud computing service.

As the core smartphone business continues to shrink, the troubled HTC has been trying to make progress in the VR space with its HTC Vive headset. In order to help stimulate consumers to have greater interest in VR and increase product sales, HTC has launched several major initiatives. In April of this year, HTC established a $100 million investment fund to invest in VR startups. In July, HTC announced that it will open more than 10,000 HTC Vive experience stations in mainland China to facilitate residents to experience this VR device.

HTC said that after reaching a partnership with Alibaba Cloud, the two parties will work together to improve the behind-the-scenes data center infrastructure needed to provide VR content to consumers.

“Cloud computing is constantly breaking the boundaries of our imagination and speeding up innovation,” said Ge Jin, director of business architecture at Alibaba Cloud, in a statement. “This collaboration makes the world’s two technologies the most disruptive. The vendors have come together to bring more value to the use of VR and cloud computing."

Ge Jin also said that the cooperation between the two sides will accelerate the development of VR technology in the Mainland and promote its widespread use worldwide.

As part of the deal, HTC recently released a VR app store for Alibaba Cloud for consumers to download.

For HTC, in order to continue to promote its HTC Vive equipment, it is logical to cooperate with Alibaba Cloud. To deliver VR and panoramic video to viewers, the data center infrastructure needs to be flexible and powerful enough to provide the high bandwidth needed to transfer large video files.

That's why Facebook has been improving its data center technology and related video compression technologies. As part of promoting the Oculus Rift VR headset, Facebook needs to smoothly stream panoramic video and VR content to users.

Ali has been trying to make its cloud computing department a leading cloud service provider in China. Due to network security and other reasons, foreign cloud computing companies such as Amazon and Microsoft are more difficult to operate in China.

Ali also released the AliLaunch project this week to integrate foreign companies' technical services into Alibaba Cloud to facilitate foreign companies doing business in China. Foreign companies such as SAP and Hitachi Data Systems are now providing services in China through Ali. (Compile / Rain)
