Since Apple required apps to be compatible with IPv6, many developers have been concerned about setting up an IPv6 testing environment. Currently, IPv6 adoption is still limited, making it challenging for some to test their applications properly.
The solution is actually quite simple: use a Mac to create a hotspot and connect your iPhone via Wi-Fi. It sounds straightforward, and most of us have done this in the office before. However, what makes this setup different is that we're creating a local IPv6 DNS64/NAT64 network, a feature introduced in OS X 10.11.
How to Build an IPv6 Test Environment on a Local MacTo ensure your app works correctly in an IPv6 environment, all you need is a Mac connected to the internet via a wired connection—ideally through an Ethernet cable. The process involves creating a hotspot on the Mac and connecting your iPhone to it via Wi-Fi. Let me walk you through the steps.
First, open System Preferences and go to the Sharing section. This is where you'll enable Internet Sharing and set up your IPv6 network.
Once in the Sharing panel, check the box for Internet Sharing. You should see an option labeled "Create NAT64 Network." If you don't see it, hold down the Option key while selecting Internet Sharing, and the option will appear.
If you're unable to find the option, make sure you're using macOS version 10.11 or later, as this feature was introduced in that release. Once enabled, the Mac will act as a gateway, translating IPv4 traffic into IPv6 for devices connected via Wi-Fi.
Select "Ethernet" as the source and choose "Wi-Fi" as the destination to share the connection. This will allow your iPhone or other devices to access the internet through the Mac’s IPv6-enabled network.
This setup is ideal for testing how your app behaves in an IPv6-only environment without needing external infrastructure. It's a quick and effective way to simulate real-world conditions and ensure your app is ready for the future of networking.
