Recently, the concept of "Shared Sleeping Pods" has taken social media by storm, catching the attention of both media outlets and curious individuals alike. On July 15th, the reporter found that the entrance to a shared sleeping pod in Beijing was locked, and the facility appeared to be closed to the public. A man who identified himself as an office worker in the vicinity mentioned that the pod had been confiscated by the police, though the exact reasons remained unclear. In the morning of July 15th, the reporter visited the "Sleeping Space" located within the China Ventures Commune in Zhongguancun, only to find that what was once a bustling hub of sleeping pods had its doors shut.
Peering through the glass door, the reporter observed a small space of less than 15 square meters housing three sets of six stacked "capsule beds." These resembled individual sleeping compartments, offering 24-hour services. During peak hours, this sleeping space typically buzzed with activity, but now stood empty, devoid of staff or visitors. The reporter noticed that some people had already tried out the pods, with one individual exiting a capsule just as the reporter arrived.
Inside each capsule, there were electric fans, reading lights, and charging ports, designed to accommodate one person at a time. The capsule's door could be closed for privacy, though the soundproofing left much to be desired. The reporter could clearly hear noise emanating from inside the pod, indicating room for improvement in acoustic design.
During the reporter’s visit, a couple approached and decided to try out one of the capsules. Simultaneously, another person emerged from a capsule after finishing their nap, speaking briefly with the reporter.
Mr. Jiang, the user, shared his thoughts: "As someone who's about 1 meter 83 tall, I found it somewhat uncomfortable to lie down due to the limited space. The soundproofing wasn't great either. The sheets weren't particularly comfortable, but the blankets were soft. The overall setup was okay, and the air conditioning helped maintain a comfortable temperature. For short breaks, it might be a decent option. If more such spaces were available in high-demand areas like this, they could prove useful. Overall, it's a decent concept."
It’s worth noting that similar shared sleeping pods have begun to appear in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. However, the specifics regarding the confiscation of the "Sleeping Space" at the Zhongguancun Zhonggang International Plaza Venture Co., Ltd. remain undisclosed. As this trend continues to grow, it raises questions about its future viability and potential legal challenges.
