Samsung QLED TV Q8C Review: 2017 flagship TV benchmarking

With the rapid rise of Internet+ and advancements in display technology, the TV has reclaimed its position as the central hub of family entertainment. As a global leader in the television industry, Samsung remains an aspirational benchmark for competitors worldwide, thanks to its unmatched picture quality and exceptional industrial design. Quantum dot technology, a promising contender for future display solutions, has captured public attention since 2014. From the first-generation quantum dots to the second-generation cadmium-free versions, and now this year's QLED quantum dots, Samsung has consistently focused on R&D and innovation in this field. Earlier this year, Samsung launched several QLED sub-dot TVs to rival OLED models. Recently, the 65-inch curved Q8C model from Samsung’s QLED lineup arrived at Sohu, marking our first hands-on evaluation. The Q8C maintains Samsung's signature minimalist design philosophy seen in previous flagships like the KS9800, featuring an ultra-narrow metal frame and a 0R curvature for an immersive viewing experience. Its back panel has been upgraded to a full-metal construction, offering a more robust texture compared to the previous generation. The rounded frame and base create a seamless integration between the screen and the body, with no visible ports or cables on the rear. The metal back panel boasts a brushed metallic finish, adding an artistic touch. The cylindrical curved base complements the screen's curvature perfectly. Every detail on the Q8C is meticulously crafted. The power cord and external device cables exit through a hole in the support stand, allowing for neat connections. All external devices can connect via slim cables just 1.8 mm in diameter. To maintain a sleek appearance, the Q8C employs a modular design, with the core components and interfaces housed in a separate console. A single cable connects the screen to the console. In terms of connectivity, the Q8C offers four HDMI ports, three USB ports, along with optical and Ethernet options, catering to most users' video and audio needs. The remote control mirrors the metallic design of the back panel, featuring a minimalist button layout. The Q8C's performance is nothing short of impressive. Leveraging QLED technology, it achieves peak brightness levels of 1500-2000 nits, six times brighter than standard TVs and three times brighter than WOLED screens. This breakthrough in brightness doesn’t compromise color accuracy; Samsung's new quantum dot tech enhances luminous efficiency while expanding the color gamut. The Q8C supports the DCI-P3 color space and is the first TV to achieve 100% color volume, meaning it reproduces all colors vividly at any brightness level. Even with such high brightness, the Q8C maintains a 100% color volume, ensuring realistic depictions of both bright and dark scenes. Quantum dot TVs boast superior energy efficiency and virtually infinite lifespan compared to WOLEDs, which degrade over time due to organic materials. In 4K testing, the Q8C demonstrates nearly flawless detail reproduction. Bright and dark areas show excellent contrast, with streetlights clearly visible. Colors are vibrant and true-to-life. The Q8C’s performance is a testament to its cutting-edge technology. The Tizen operating system powers the Q8C, offering a clean, intuitive interface with smooth animations. Users can easily adjust display settings and access a wide range of apps via the app store. The Q8C comes preloaded with Mango TV and Galaxy Kiwi video content, featuring popular shows like "Daily Up," "Happy Camp," and "I Am a Singer." Remote communication has been enhanced with upgraded versions of Samsung TV and QQ ICT, enabling comprehensive sharing of images, videos, audio, and text. Logging in allows users to share favorite content with family members, storing it securely in Tencent Cloud. Voice assistants add convenience, letting users search for content hands-free by pressing the button on the remote. The Q8C represents Samsung's commitment to innovation, pushing boundaries in picture quality, design, and user interaction. It sets a new industry benchmark, showcasing Samsung's dedication to excellence and its vision for the future.
