Japan develops mercury-free gas discharge lamps

Japan's small wire manufacturing and Japan Denso have successfully jointly developed the world's first mercury-free gas discharge lamp with Toyota Motor Corporation. The lamp has been used in the new car "Porte" that Toyota Motor has listed recently.

Gas discharge lamps have superior performance compared to halogen lamps. Its brightness and life are 3 to 2 times higher than the former, and the power consumption is only about 2/3 of the former. Night driving also ensures sufficient brightness. Therefore, it is used as a lamp to help improve the safety of the car. The new car installation rate in 2003 has increased by about 20%.

Joint research and development was carried out by Toyota Motor, Filament Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and Japan Philips. In terms of discharge tubes, the search for mercury substitutes has improved the shape of the discharge tubes. In terms of the ballast, the power supply is optimized and the accuracy is improved. Thus, a gas discharge lamp that can emit bright light without mercury is developed. By increasing the operating frequency of the circuit and further reducing the component size, the ballast is reduced in size by half.
