Gartner: Mobile payment users will reach 141 million in 2011

The morning of July 23, Beijing time news, the latest data released by the US market research company Gartner shows that the number of mobile payment users will exceed 141 million this year.

This figure is 38.2% higher than the 102.1 million users in 2010. It is expected that the amount of mobile payment funds will reach 86.1 billion U.S. dollars this year, an increase of about 76% from last year's 48.9 million U.S. dollars.

Despite the slow progress in the application of mobile payment technology, the era of mobile payment services is on the verge of soaring.

The mobile, retail, and financial industries have been launching Near Field Communication (NFC) to users to guide users to pay via smart phones. However, the application of mobile payment technology is still stagnant, because the main competitors in this market have not established their own market share, and they have not cooperated in the launch of basic application software.

Sandy Shen, Gartner's research director, said in a report that companies in developed markets are imagining the prospects of NFC, but are not aware of the complexity of this service model; Gartner believes that NFC It takes at least 4 years for payment methods to be widely accepted by the market. The biggest obstacle is how to allow users to change their payment habits, persuade users to abandon cash and credit card payments and instead use mobile payment.

Gartner said that the transfer of funds and prepaid recharge functions may become the key to promoting mobile payment services in emerging markets. For Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, the convenience of capital transfer and mobile account escalation through this channel will be particularly significant. This year, the proportion of capital transfer transactions and prepaid recharge transactions in these areas will account for 54% and 32% of total mobile payments respectively.

However, Gartner also expects that retail shopping will become the main area of mobile payment applications, especially in developed countries.
